Singers still needed for record-setting caroling

Christmas may be five months away but that is not stopping one local radio station from getting in some caroling practice as well as setting a world record.
Family Life Radio is partnering with St. Lorenz Lutheran Church, Bronner’s CHRISTmas Wonderland, Tri-Star Bank, Grasel Graphics and Rau’s Country Store in an attempt to break the Guinness Book of World Records for the “Most People Caroling” at one time.
The event will take place beginning at 1pm this Saturday, July 25 – five months from Christmas – starting at St. Lorenz Lutheran Church, located at the corner of West Tuscola and Dehmel Roads in Frankenmuth.
Family Life Radio’s “Peter and Shannyn in the Morning” are leading the event. They are Peter Brooks and Shannyn Caldwell. They can be heard at 99.7 WUGN FM in Midland.
“The current record for the most people Christmas caroling is 1,882 people,” Brooks said. “We are confident that our amazing listeners can blow past that and make history. We are hoping to gather about 2,500 carolers.”
The radio station has gained the approval from Guinness to make the attempt July 25.
Caroling will take place on Mission Ridge, Harlan Drive and Harlan Court. From 1-3pm, Frankenmuth Police Department officers will conducting traffic control and street closures at Mayer at Tuscola, Mayer at Ardussi and Harlan at Craemer.
“We have over 800 people who have registered. We are inviting persons to show up the day of the event . . . I hope we get rolled over the day of the event,” Caldwell said.
Registration is not required, however, as of press time, over 800 persons have signed up. Visit and follow the links to 𠇎vents” to find the registration field. The only rules are as follows:
1. Registrants must be at St. Lorenz Lutheran Church by 1pm July 25.
2. Registrants must understand this is a rain or shine event and they will be in the elements up to three hours.
3. Registrants must be able to walk several blocks unassisted.
The group will move from the church and carol at 10 separate homes with fewer than five minutes between doors.
St. Lorenz is providing the sheet music and conductor. The carolers will sing “Silent Night” and “Joy To The World.”
Participants’ eight-years old or older will receive a commemorative t-shirt and be entered to win a getaway to Zehnder’s Splash Village. Bronner’s is funding the t-shirts for the first 2,500 participants. Children are encouraged to join in, however, those under eight years old will not be counted. They will receive a Christmas ornament from Bronner’s.
“Peter and I had the idea years ago, to go Christmas caroling with our listeners,” Caldwell said. “When we saw the 25th of July fell on a Saturday, we decided to pursue it.”
Next, discovered there was an actual Guinness record for the most people singing Christmas carols.
“They are coming from all parts of Michigan . . . from our listening area to metro Detroit, Grand Rapids and many points across the state,” Caldwell added.
Volunteer “stewards” are needed to help document the number of participants. Each steward will be responsible for verifying that their group of 50 participants actually sang.
To assist, contact St. Lorenz Pastor Mark Brandt at 652-0774 or
“This is going to be a great family event for absolutely everyone. We can’t wait!” Caldwell said. “We need everybody we can get to make this happen. If you can read, walk and sing a Christmas carol, we need you and all of your friends, too.”
