Eagle thinclads take third place at Bay City Western Invitational
The month of May is here and the Frankenmuth varsity boys’ track and field team is competing in larger school meets to prepare for the MHSAA post season.
The Eagle thinclads traveled to the 12-team Bay City Western Invitational on Friday, May 5, and came home with a third-place finish with 84 points.
“It was a great effort for the team in very challenging conditions. The boys did not let the weather affect their performance,” FHS Coach Jerry Drake said.
The host Warriors won the invite with 99 points, followed by Alpena with 95 points. Midland Dow was fourth (75.50 points) and Midland was fifth (64 points).
“The boys took third place and were only beat by two Class A teams. The wind was running at 20 MPH and it was a cold day. Not a good day for fast times,” Drake added.
The weight events and hurdles bolstered the point production, followed by depth across the board in the other events.
Dan Stone won the shot put (57-1) and the discus (163-2). Teammate Nathan Lambeth was fifth in the shot put (44-3) and Nathan Stone was seventh (42-2.50).
Grant Bronner won both the 110-meter high hurdles (:15.11) and the 300m low hurdles (:40.13). Both are personal best times for the senior.
Alec Yagiela continues to lower his times in the sprint events. Yagiela was second in the 100m dash (:11.48) and sixth in the 200m dash (:23.44). Jared Davis was ninth in the 200m dash (:23.94). It was the second time Davis has run the open 200m this season.
400m sprinter Michael Crary took a valuable fourth place in that race, clocking a :54.41. Bronner was fifth in the high jump, with a leap of 5-10. Collin Reinert was ninth with a jump of 5-6.
The 800m relay team took third place with a time of 1:35.88. Team members included Davis, Hunter Schluckebier, Crary and Yagiela.
Schluckebier, Davis and Yagiela joined Jacob Brownell and took fifth place in the 400m relay, clocking a :49.19.
The two distance relays both settled for sixth-place finishes. The 1600m foursome of Davis, Bronner, Crary and Jack Lee ran a time of 3:40.62 and the 3200m quartet of Lee, Isaak Biddle, Matt Heinzman and Alex Benko ran a time of 8:57.26.
Lee also ran in the open 800m run and took eighth place with a personal best 2:05.16 and Wesley Beck was eighth in the 1600m run (4:50.70).
Frankenmuth will host a Tri-Valley Conference East Division meet today (May 10), beginning at 4pm, with Millington and North Branch visiting.
