Calling all survivors and caregivers for the Relay For Life of Frankenmuth: That means you!
If you’ve ever been to an American Cancer Society Relay For Life event, you know that in addition to the many volunteers and participants, the survivors and caregivers are the heart and soul of this great event. But in the effort to highlight these important individuals, organizers have come to realize that many who rightfully fall into one (or both) of these categories do not even realize they are survivors and caregivers.
Perhaps the biggest misunderstanding is with survivors. A cancer survivor is defined by the American Cancer Society as anyone who is living with cancer, from the date of diagnosis. If you have ever heard the words, "You have cancer," you are, from that point forward, a survivor. Many survivors believe this applies only during remission, but even if you are currently undergoing treatment — or are scheduled to begin treatment — you are still a survivor.
Caregivers are equally as important, and many times, they are just as reluctant to step forward. If you’ve ever provided any kind of support, assistance, treatment or care to a cancer patient, you are a caregiver. This can take many forms; from providing a ride to treatment to living in the home and providing 24-hour care. Caregivers can be family members and friends or those employed in the healthcare industry whose job involves caring for cancer patients. Regardless of your level of involvement, caregivers should be honored, because cancer is an illness that affects many – both directly and indirectly.
Survivors and caregivers have described attending a Relay For Life event as a life-changing experience. The event features planned activities to honor and applaud survivors and caregivers, including meals, special laps and commemorative mementos.
The event planners hope to see many survivors and caregivers at this year’s event, as well as anyone who would like to get involved in this important cause. The 2014 Relay For Life of Frankenmuth will take place June 21-22 at Harvey Kern Pavilion beginning at 10am.
