Stadlers have purchase agreement on Frankenmuth Farmers Market
The Frankenmuth Farmers Market never made it to the Saginaw County Sheriff’s Sale last Friday morning, thanks to a local couple.
Frankenmuth’s Chuck and Lisa Stadler entered into a two-party agreement with the Farmers Market Board of Directors on Thursday, April 11. While the Stadlers had heard rumors about the market’s sale, it was a Frankenmuth News article published March 27 that prompted their interest.
“The article was how I became aware of the Sheriff’s Auction. I had heard through the grapevine that things were not doing well. I reached out to the board, learned how a Sheriff’s Sale works along with its pratfalls, and entered into a deal before it went to the auction,” Chuck said.
The building inspection has been done, the Stadlers are waiting on the survey and they hope to close on the Market by late spring.
The Market was founded in 2005 in downtown Frankenmuth and 10 years later, plans were made to build the current market. The land purchase and build costs were a little over $3 million, with $1.5 million borrowed from the Frankenmuth Credit Union at a significantly low interest rate.
The Stadlers entered the agreement and just returned from a recent short vacation on Sunday evening. The current plans for the building include moving their Lazy Dog Pizza from the Mid-Town Shops, 154 South Main Street, to the market, 534 North Main Street. The new location will afford seating for 70 persons inside and 35 outside.
The Stadlers have a Michigan Liquor Control Commission license they plan to remove from escrow to add alcoholic beverages to the Lazy Dog Pizza menu.
The couple’s original plans were to move Lazy Dog Pizza to the former Horizons Bank, 464 North Main Street, across from the Bavarian Mall. While currently an empty bank, it is now for lease by the Stadlers.
Chuck recognizes the Market board of directors have many diverse skills and experiences and will work with them to choose the next direction for the property. Much has changed over the past 5-7 years in how markets operate.
While still a possibility, it is not set in stone that a farmers market will remain part of the plans. Usually, the Farmers Market opens on Saturdays beginning in mid-May through October, with Wednesday dates added in early summer.
The plan is to brainstorm for the best and most feasible use of the Market property, including the pavilion located directly behind the Gathering Barn. The couple does not want to make any hasty decisions.
Chuck and Lisa also own other local businesses, including Core Staffing, a medical staffing company owned and operate by clinicians; rtNow Health and Medical for telerespiratory staffing solutions; Vital Tech Solutions, Handy Bavarians commercial and residential contractors (founded a year ago), and Crossroads Convenience Store in Caro.
